About the Centre

Baw Baw YMCA Swimming Pools comprise of 5 outdoor locations throughout the local Government area, including:

  • Drouin Outdoor Pool
  • Neerim South Outdoor Pool
  • Trafalgar Outdoor Pool
  • Thorpdale Outdoor Pool
  • Rawson Indoor Pool

These seasonal outdoor aquatic facilities form a key component for community recreation engagement throughout the December to end of March operating season. The facilities offer a range of programs and services such as recreational swimming, fitness programs, swimming lessons, community events and more.

Key Elements of the Role

Pool Lifeguards at the Baw Baw Outdoor Pools take on a much greater responsibility than simply supervising water space. As well as identifying potential risk factors & taking steps to reduce those risks, lifeguards will act as positive role models in an effort to build strong people, strong families and strong communities. Successful lifeguards will be able to provide the highest level of supervision whilst maintaining a fun and safe environment for all. Staff must be available to work a variety of shifts including a minimum of two weekend shifts per month and available during January school holidays.

The Seasonal Pool Lifeguard will:

  • Provide adequate supervision of aquatic facilities to ensure the safety of all facility users.
  • Maintain concentrated observation of pools and patrons to anticipate and respond to problems
  • Identify and quickly respond appropriately to any emergency
  • Ensure facility rules are being obeyed whilst at the same time educating facility users about safe aquatic practices.
  • Educate patrons and enforce the Watch around Water Program
  • Ensure patrons are protected from unruly behaviour and dangerous actions
  • Carry out intervention and preventative action to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patrons, the facility and equipment
  • In conjunction with facility management facilitate the timely and safe use of water space, in clearly defined areas using appropriate signage
  • In the event of injury or illness provide appropriate first aid
  • Act as area warden in an emergency situation evacuating the centre if required
  • Conduct cleaning & safe control measures for:
    • Changerooms
    • Lost property
    • Public use equipment
  • Perform delegated and rostered maintenance & cleaning duties
  • Undertake regular cleaning and tidying duties to ensure the maintenance of a safe environment for staff and patrons
  • Advise management personnel of requirements for:
    • Re-stocking of first aid, cleaning, chemical supplies
    • Troubleshooting, maintenance, breakdowns
  • Comply with legislative and organisational requirements relating to:
    • Health and Wellbeing Regulations
    • Current water restrictions
    • Occupational Health and Safety
    • Guidelines for Safe Pool Operation
    • Workcover
    • YMCA Risk Management
    • YMCA Operations and Pool Lifeguarding
    • YMCA Aquatic Supervision program
    • Incident reporting
  • Perform other duties as required

Knowledge and Experience

  • Customer Service Experience will be highly regarded
  • Experience in the Aquatics and Leisure industry will be highly regarded

  • Providing excellent customer service for all members and guests
  • Being proactive with presentation of the facility
  • Punctual in both attendance on shift and attendance at staff meetings

  • Flexible to work across a 7 day roster including weekends in an effort to share the workload
  • Sets an example for parents by interacting, communicating, guiding, and setting clear boundaries and expectations for children in healthy and respectful ways

Qualifications

Mandatory Pre-requisite Qualifications

  • Pool Lifeguard Award
  • HLTAID003 Apply first aid or equivalent
  • HLTAID001 Perform CPR or equivalent

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Defibrillator Qualification

YMCA, including Boards of Directors, is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people in accordance with our Safeguarding Children and Young People framework. YMCA requires that all applicants undergo satisfactory screening prior to commencement, including but not limited to:

  • a national criminal history check;
  • an international criminal history check where applicants have worked overseas;
  • holding or obtaining a Working with Children Clearance/ equivalent in accordance with state/ territory laws;
  • ACF Safeguarding Children and Young People Certificate (completion online prior to commencement)
  • Two reference checks.

Any successfully appointed applicant will be required to adhere to the Safeguarding Children and Young People framework, which includes a thorough safeguarding children and young people induction and committing to upholding the safety and wellbeing of children and young people throughout their engagement with YMCA.
